Hollie Chessman's Blog and Portfolio

It has been awhile…

January 18th, 2016 | Posted by Hollie Chessman in 2016

So since that “Epic Day” in July when I defended my dissertation – a lot has happened.  I started my post-doc at the American Council on Education (ACE) in Washington, DC as a Graduate Research Associate.  I have been learning a lot, and have really enjoyed the experience.

Things I have discovered:

  1.  I like commuting (at least in DC).  Riding the metro to and from the city is not so bad.  It beats trying to operate a car in DC.  It is great when my colleague and I carpool, and I get to be her +1 for 66 after 495!
  2. I am have learned how to operate NVivo – which is a qualitative software.  What has been great about this — is that it has opened my eyes to other ways to approach research.  My colleague Lindsay Wayt and I did a blog on TheDemands.org website — and we worked hard to capture the demands students are making on college campuses across the nation related to diversity, social justice and inclusivity.  NVivo was key to making that happen. You can check that blog here!
  3. I am taking things a day at a time.  While my internship is done at the end of April, and I don’t have a full-time position — yet…. I have faith that my efforts in applying and networking will work out.
  4. I have lots of presentations to give in March in April!  I am headed to ACPA and NASPA to talk about my research on student affairs and well-being.  At AERA I will be talking about my research on students affairs and well-being, as well as my new research on graduate student choice.  Dr. Jaime Lester and Amy Gillies and I will be presenting in DC in April.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to talk about all this great stuff!
  5. I like working in higher education policy and research.  While there are times I miss the energy of a college campus, and talking with students.  The ability to make a contribution and help colleagues make contributions to higher education research is rewarding.  I like having a macro-level view.  If I do end up back in the academy as a practitioner or scholar, I hope to maintain a macro-level view of what is happening in higher education.

Send some positive vibes in my direction as the job search is off to a start!  If you hear or anything or would like to send something my way — please do: holliemchessman@gmail.com
